Born in Trento , Italy in 1964, he started medical school at
the University of Florence in 1982 and graduated with honours in
1988. As a final year medical student, in 1987, he prepared his
graduation thesis based on a research project conducted in the
department of Otolaryngology of the University of Florence. It
was at this early stage that he was first exposed to Plastic
Surgery in Head and Neck reconstruction. Upon graduation he was
accepted on to a training program in the School of
Specialisation in Otolaryngology of the same University.
During his ENT training he worked under the tutelage of Prof.
D. Lo Russo, Otolaryngologist and Plastic Surgeon, Director of
the Service of Head and Neck Reconstructive Surgery in the
University Department of Otolaryngology, in Florence. He
acquired experience in the management of Head and Neck
malignancies as an active member of a team performing major
operations of resection and reconstruction of the Head & Neck.
His interest in reconstructive surgery led to his
Specialisation Thesis in the Reconstruction of oro-mandibular
defects following resections for cancer and subsequently to his
decision to train in Plastic Surgery.
In November 1991 he entered the School of Specialisation in
Plastic Surgery at the University of Parma: a five year training
program rotating through the University departments of Parma,
Pisa and Florence and including one year in the Department of
Plastic Surgery at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.
He Specialised in Plastic Surgery with honours in November
1996. He came back to UK where he undertook further training in
Bristol as a Specialist Registrar in Plastic Surgery and two
fellowships in Head and Neck Surgery in Belfast and in
Amsterdam. Both units handle a large volume of cases, the
Amsterdam Unit is particularly well-recognised throughout Europe
and maintains a prolific academic and clinical research output.
In November 1998 Mr Orlando successfully passed the exam to
become Diplomate of the European Board of Plastic Reconstructive
and Aesthetic Surgery and in April 2000 became Fellow of the
Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Appointed as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon in Frenchay
Hospital (North Bristol NHS Trust) in 1999, he developed a
special interest in Head and Neck Surgery and Skin cancer. He
works in close collaboration with the Otolaryngologists and the
Neurosurgeons in the management of major head and neck cancers
providing complex reconstruction with microsurgical techniques.
His cosmetic training has progressed parallel to his
reconstructive interest since the early stage of his plastic
surgery training. He has worked and trained in cosmetic surgery
in Florence, Parma and Bristol and he also regularly attends
numerous courses and meetings in the UK, Europe and America.
Mr Orlando is fully trained and qualified to practice
cosmetic surgery. He is on the Specialist Register of the
General Medical Council for Plastic Surgery since 1997 (n.
4083711). His cosmetic practice includes a wide range of
procedures including facial surgery (face lift, blepharoplasty
and rhinoplasty), cosmetic breast surgery (augmentation, lift
and reduction,) body contouring (abdominoplasty and liposuction)
and other non-surgical procedures.
