Dangers Associated with Exposure to the Sun
Whilst we all feel better when the sun is shining and there
is evidence that sunshine is good for us (extra Vitamin D for
example), there are many dangers associated with exposure to the
sun.
The most obvious is sunburn, where the skin reddens, becomes
sore and may even blister.
Even without burning, over the years exposure to the ultraviolet
rays in sunshine will cause skin to age prematurely. The effects
are sagging and wrinkling, loss of elasticity and brown spots on
the skin.
As well as ageing, sun exposure is the most common cause of skin
cancers and some of these – melanoma for example – can be fatal.
Protection from the Sun
The best way to avoid problems associated with sun exposure
is to follow some simple guidelines:
- Wear plenty of sunscreen – one which blocks UVA and UVB
and has an SPF of 15 or more
- Wear long-sleeved shirts and trousers
- Put on a hat – especially one with a wide brim
- Stay in the shade between 11am and 3pm
- Avoid using sun beds
